Although he wasn’t much older than many of the students he spoke to on Tuesday at Cibola High School, Lance Cpl. Angel Reyes said he felt it was important to help educate them about the dangers of drugs and alcohol.

“I heard about the event and wanted to help out,” said Reyes, who joined the Marine Corps after graduating high school. “These teens are only a year or two younger than me, so to be able to give them information I could have used back then, it is something I would gladly do, so they can make smart decisions.”

Cpl. Alanna Hamilton, the cryogenics technician at Marine Corps Air Station-Yuma who was the city’s Silver Spur Rodeo Queen in 2014, is back in the spotlight after clinching the statewide title. 

She was named Miss Rodeo Arizona 2016 at the annual rodeo in Payson last August, but her reign will officially begin with a ceremony that she could have held anywhere in the state.

The need to produce 70 percent more food by the year 2050 to sustain a growing global population with less water and land sounds like “Mission Impossible.” Moreover, the agricultural trends in technology alone to accomplish this seem more like science fiction than reality.

“Ag is seen as the next frontier for technology,” says Paul Brierley, the University of Arizona’s executive director of the Yuma Center of Excellence for Desert Agriculture. “Much work is being done to apply Silicon Valley and military technology to agricultural needs and to bring venture capital to that process to make it happen.”

Whether it is as a launching point for tests of helicopters or unmanned aircraft, or for the takeoff of cargo planes full of parachutes under test or Special Forces jumpers undergoing training, YPG’s Laguna Army Airfield (LAAF) is a bustling place.

With thousands of sorties per year, the airfield’s runways have hosted an increase in traffic in recent years and are subject to a variety of unique hazards. Harrier fighter jets, for example, vent exhaust gasses hot enough to melt asphalt and have hard, high-pressure tires that are unfriendly to pavement. Further, the runways are occasionally struck by lightning, which can perforate the pavement. Yet the runways’ greatest enemy is ordinary wear and tear from frequent, routine use.
